I don’t know about you, but I just love taking my children to the library. Not only is it a free, safe place we can go together, but it is jam-packed of activities and resources for the entire family, from storytime for the littlest family members, to interesting things for mum and dad to do! Nottingham Central Library is no different, and plays host to a huge number of free family activities for children of all ages and their parents. Here are some fun things to do for families.
Browse the Children’s Library
Located on the ground floor, the Children’s Library houses an extensive collection of children’s books, talking books, CDs and DVDs. I find buying new books expensive, especially considering how quickly children grow out of them, so we often head to the library for some new material. You can borrow and renew 24 items, access the public computers and internet and event view the Parent’s Collection!

Totstime is a free activities for pre-schoolers and their parents or carers. Come along and enjoy singing and music with parent interaction – you and your tot can sing some familiar songs and learn some new ones, while using movement to encourage coordination and develop those fine motor skills. There’s also stories, rhymes and super-cute puppets such as Itsy Bitsy Spider!
Totstime runs every Thursday during school term time from 10:45am to 11:15am and sessions are free to participate in. You can view a video of Totstime below.
School Holiday Activities
During the school holidays, Nottingham Central Library runs a number of awesome activities for school-aged kids. During the October half-term break, for example, the library ran a Lego building competition. They also have Halloween events and other activities throughout the school holidays.
Just some of the other activities the library has put on for children include the following:
• The annual Libraries Week activities during October
• The annual Summer Reading Challenge
• Musical productions for children aged 3-5 years
• Coding workshops
Always check with the library regarding any costs first, as some events or activities may incur a fee.

Let’s not forget about mums and dads! Nottingham Central Library has a heap of great activities for parents and carers that includes family History drop-in sessions, exhibitions, author talks, courses and workshops. Don't forget - some activities may incur a cost so always check with the library first.
If you're ever stuck for ideas about what to do with the kids, take a trip to Nottingham Central Library. You can read a book together, sing some songs or take part in some awesome activities - sounds like fun to me!
