M is quite the character—she's a writer, a mother, and yes, a woman. On the surface, she's out here nailing it with her hit play. But surprise! Motherhood has other plans, and it's hijacked her spotlight. Now, M's feeling burnt out, angrier than a toddler denied their snacks, lonely in the middle of a crowd, and desperately craving connection while simultaneously feeling about as connected as a phone with no signal. The future? Let's just say it's looking a bit like a Monday morning.

M's got a story to tell, but the world around her seems really keen on chiming in about who she should be and how she might be failing at being a mother or a writer or just… a person. This isn't your typical heartwarming motherhood tale; it's brutally honest and dashed with a fierce sense of humour. In her Bruntwood Prize shortlisted play, Jane Upton gets down to the nitty-gritty of motherhood, peeling back that glossy layer to show the messy, chaotic truth underneath.
