For those of you looking for an afternoon out with a truly remarkable individual, the National Holocaust Museum, a short drive from Nottingham, is hosting something rather special. On Wednesday 13th August 2025, between 1pm and 2:30pm, you can meet John Hajdu MBE. John was born in Budapest in 1937, into a Jewish family, and his early years were, shall we say, anything but quiet. He navigated the terrifying currents of the Holocaust, witnessed the rise of antisemitism firsthand, and found himself in the Budapest Ghetto. Thanks to some incredible pluck from his aunt, he managed to evade deportation and survived the war under truly dire circumstances. After enduring Hungary's Communist regime for a bit, he decided in 1956 it was time for a change of scenery and made his way to the UK in 1957. He arrived with little more than a good dose of optimism and proceeded to build a successful life, spending time in hospitality and contributing handsomely to his local community. It is fair to say he has seen a bit of the world.
If that sounds like your cup of tea, tickets are priced at a tenner for adults, nine pounds for concessions, and seven pounds fifty for children aged 8 to 16. A family ticket will set you back thirty quid. Do keep in mind that the special event tickets are an extra five pounds per person, or three pounds fifty for children, on top of the usual museum admission. The museum itself, by the way, has a couple of permanent exhibitions, including 'The Journey', which recently had a two million pound facelift and is perfect for anyone aged nine and up. They also boast some rather lovely memorial gardens and a coffee shop if you fancy a light lunch or a sweet treat. And here is a handy tip: general admission tickets are valid for a whole year of unlimited return visits. You can sniff out the full summer 2025 events timetable on their website.
