Bassist Arnie Somogyi and pianist Mark Edwards have been poking around Duke Ellington's last recording, The Eastbourne Performance, and have turned that curiosity into The Ellington Piano Project, a new album and a short UK tour. The programme mixes reworkings of Ellington classics with original pieces inspired by his improvisations, and there is the pleasingly odd detail that the piano played at that 1975 Eastbourne concert gets a starring role. The recording features Dutch tenor saxophonist Gideon Tazelaar, who lives in New York, and drummer Matthew Holmes. 2025 is the 50th anniversary of the Eastbourne recording, the album is due on Rubicon Jazz in October 2025 and the tour leads to a day of Ellington themed events and an evening concert at The Congress Theatre, Eastbourne on 12 October to mark the anniversary.
