The is set for Wednesday 16th July 2025. It's a free event, starting at Nottingham Contemporary at 1pm and wrapping up an hour later. This walk is part of the "Your Ears Later Will Know to Listen" exhibition, which explores how sound makes its way through different identities and histories. Dr Helen Foster will lead a wander through the historic streets around Nottingham Contemporary. You'll get to hear snippets from the Nottingham Oral History Collection, recorded in the 1980s, offering a glimpse into the everyday lives of local folk from the earlier half of the twentieth century. It's a bit like time travel for your ears, helping you connect these old voices to the very places you're walking. Helen sees these oral histories as a form of "found poetry," which sounds rather more intriguing than simply old interviews. There will also be a chance to view some poetry films Helen created, inspired by this collection, following her recent writing residency with the British Library where she basically brought old sounds back home.
Helen herself is a writer, researcher, and oral historian who enjoys playing with words and poetic forms, especially those unearthed from archives. She has a knack for making history sing. Just a heads up: this is an off site stroll around town, so meet at Nottingham Contemporary's reception. The route does include a few hills and steps, so comfy shoes are probably a good idea. Speakers will use microphones, and if you have any access questions, just get in touch with Nottingham Contemporary directly. The walk will take in Middle Hill (down to the library area and back up), the Adams Building, Stoney Street in the Lace Market, St Mary's Church, and the National Justice Museum, before heading back to Nottingham Contemporary. It's a good old constitutional with a soundtrack.
