If you are looking for an excuse to dive headfirst into Japanese culture without the need for a passport, then might be just what you are after. It is happening on Monday 14 July 2025, kicking off at 7:30pm, over at the Nottingham Arts Theatre. This three-hour event promises a rather sensible ticket price of ten to thirteen pounds. You will find SA-SHI-SU performing, a duo featuring Shamio, a shamisen player with a considerable online following, and Nubia, an award-winning cellist. They are known for their covers of Studio Ghibli films and Japanese game music, blending traditional strings with a modern twist. Nottingham-based koto artist Aki Kitagawa will also be there, showcasing the delicate sounds of the koto, a rather elegant traditional Japanese instrument.
For those who prefer their Japanese sounds with a bit more punch, DJ Manimal will be on the decks, spinning anime openings and something intriguing called 'neo-shamisen beats'. It certainly sounds like it will be energetic. Beyond the music, you can expect to find some authentic Japanese snacks to nibble on, and there will be cultural merchandise available if you fancy taking a bit of Japan home with you. It seems like a pretty relaxed way to spend a Monday evening, immersing yourself in the music and spirit of Japan right here in Nottingham.
