On Monday 30 March 2026, Simon Lawford will be tinkling the ivories, or rather the pipes, at the Albert Hall in Nottingham for a lunchtime organ recital kicking off at 1.10pm and wrapping up by 1.55pm. Admission is a fiver, and youre welcome to munch your own packed lunch while he plays through Gordon Jacobs Festal Flourish, Joseph Jongens Menuet-Scherzo, Tchaikovskys Symphony No. 6 finale arranged by Lawford himself, Saint-Saens Trois Rhapsodies numbers 4, 5 and 8, and Marcel Dupres Final. Its the opener for their 2026 lunchtime series, perfect if youre in the mood for some classical organ action without the evening commitment.
Simon, currently organist at Notre-Dame de France in Leicester Square, has quite the CV, from chorister at St Pauls Cathedral to organ scholar at Magdalen College Oxford, and stints at places like Peterborough and Canterbury Cathedrals. He ran the music at Hampstead Parish Church and spent over a decade building a top choir in Perth, Australia, even starting a baroque group that tackled Handel and Bach on period instruments down under. Back in the UK, hes juggled assistant gigs at various cathedrals, and in a plot twist, he once jammed briefly with the prog rock band Focus in Cardiff back in 2008, proving organists can rock out too.
