So, from May 13 to May 24, 2025, Nottingham Playhouse will be putting on a rather powerful production of "," which is basically Khaled Hosseini's follow-up to "The Kite Runner." Picture this: it's 1992 in Afghanistan, a country trying to pick up the pieces after a rather nasty breakup with war. Enter Laila, an orphaned girl who suddenly finds herself navigating a scary new world. But instead of a white knight riding in to save her, she ends up marrying her creepy neighbour, Rasheed, who's decided that having two wives is just the ticket to domestic bliss. Spoiler alert: it's not.
Now, Rasheed's first wife, Mariam, is not thrilled about this whole arrangement, especially since she has to deal with her newly pregnant competition. As if that wasn't enough, the Taliban decide to crash their party, turning life into a grim survival game where food and safety are more like unicorns—hard to find and mythical at best. Directed by Roxana Silbert—who's got a bit of pedigree in the theatre world—this show dives into the bond between these two women, who somehow find themselves teaming up against all sorts of madness. Who knew that in the midst of chaos, a bit of girl power and resilience could still shine through?
